CDL driver jobs are alternately referred to as "trucking" or "truck driver" jobs, and involve making deliveries in an efficient manner via trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating, or GVWR, in excess of 26,001 lbs. More generally speaking, these vehicles are tractor trailers. The Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 is the governing statute that gives U.S. states the authority and right to issue commercial drivers licenses, but also places various federal requirements that all CDL drivers must meet. Those with a CDL are said to be qualified to drive commercial motor vehicles - or CMVs - and Longer Combination Vehicles (LCVs). There are also special testing and qualification requirements for various types of transportation jobs - these are referred to as "endorsements" and include a designation on the CDL license. Some such endorsements include N: Tank Truck, H: Hazardous Materials, X: Combination Tank Vehicle and Hazmat and T: Semi Trailer Double or Triple, to name just a few.
